Q: I’m on a tight budget. What about public or private land hunts in the $2500-$4000 range?
A: Unfortunately, most state/provincial Game and Fish departments do not manage for trophy quality bucks. On most hunts in this price range, your chances of killing any legal buck will be 15-75%, depending on the outfitter, your own hunting skills, and weather conditions. Your chance of killing a good buck that scores up to 130” gross B&C are very slim, normally, less than 5%. Your chances of killing a buck over 130” gross B&C are nearly zero. In the long run, if you want to harvest one good buck in your life, you are better off coming to Canadian Hunt Ranch once and spending $2500, then going to ten deer hunts, and still not harvesting a big buck.
Q: What are the success rates at Canadian Hunt Ranch?
A: Our success rates are nearly 100%. Only once did a client leave without a buck. He had two opportunities for a shot and missed them both. Naturally, he did not have to pay for his time at the ranch. He was invited back to hunt again and use his original deposit toward his next hunt.
Q: How many days of hunting are included in the price?
A: At Canadian Hunt Ranch, we charge according to the size of the animal and not by how long it takes to harvest the animal. Before you book your hunt we will try to get an idea of expectations, e.g. bow hunt or rifle hunt, 10 point buck or 12 point buck, stalk or ground blind. From there we will reserve the amount of time we think it should take to get your animal. For example, we would book more time for a bow hunter than we would for a rifle hunter. On average, it takes two days for a hunter to get his animal.
Q: What about bow hunters and muzzleloaders?
A: Both bow hunters and muzzleloaders are welcome at Canadian Hunt Ranch. We do, however, have a wounding policy. Once we have drawn blood, we will hunt that buck until we find him.
Q: How are the hunts conducted?
A: At Canadian Hunt Ranch, each hunter will have a personal guide. Each hunter will have the choice of hunting from a ground blind, tree stand or stalk the animal. Most hunters do not like the tree stand because the trees are so thick that visibility is poor once you get about 15 feet high. Most hunters use a combination of ground blinds and stalking.
Q: What are the actual hunting seasons?
A: We are a private ranch in Quebec and as such we can hunt all year long. However, normally, we hunt just after the bucks are shed their velvet-mid September to three weeks before they drop their antlers-end of January.
Q: What is included in the hunt price?
A: For the price listed you receive, one dinner the night before the hunt, lunch on the days of the hunt, 1x1 guide service, trophy is gutted, caped and prepared for transport back home, Goods and Service taxes, all paper work to return home with your trophy.
Q: What other expenses should I expect?
A: In addition to the listed hunt price, you will have these additional fees:
- Firearm registration at the Canadian Border, $35 for a three month permit
- Lodging, which ranges from $50/ night to $120/ night for single occupancy depending on the quality of motel.
- The butchering of your meat if you decide to not take the full carcass home ranges from $100-$250 depending on the size of your animal and how you would like the meat prepared.
- Breakfast each morning. You can choose a motel that will include breakfast in the price.
- Dinners – except for one night.
Q: I’m not in as good a physical condition as I used to be. Will I be able to handle this hunt?
A: Although the elevation changes, the terrain is not mountain climbing. Your guide will hunt at a pace you can handle. We can access the ranch in 4WD’s for those who have difficulty walking.
Q: What happens if the buck I shoot scores higher than my guide thought it would?
A: As long as you shoot the buck your guide told you to shoot, there are no additional costs. If you see an animal that is larger than what you originally wanted, then you and your guide will have to do some quick negotiating on the spot. Before you shoot any animal, we will let you know what that animal costs – the rest is up to you.
Q: How many other hunters will be hunting at the ranch?
A: Canadian Hunt Ranch likes to only have one group hunting at a time. Very rarely has the previous group stayed an extra morning because they did not get the buck they were looking for.
Q: How many people can we have in a hunting group?
A: We have had as many as eight people in one group, however, only one person is hunting with a loaded firearm at any given time. Other people in the group can be carrying a video recorder or pushing the animals toward the hunter and guide.
Q: Can I have combination hunts at Canadian Hunt Ranch?
A: Yes! The other main animals we hunt at the ranch are European Boar and Red Stags. Call us for more information about these hunts.
